Dehydration is an imbalance of water and minerals in the body, and can cause serious complications for cats. The causes of dehydration can be – diarrhea, vomiting, long exposure at high temperatures, renal diseases or fever.

Dehydration occurs when fluid levels drop to less than normal. This is due to either reduced water intake or increased fluid loss.

There are a few ways that you can check or see if your cat is dehydrated.

Decreased skin elasticity – pinch the skin and tent it up, pull it up gently. If the cat is hydrated the skin will go back to normal in less that one second, if it takes more to get back to normal then the cat is dehydrated.

Gums aspect – when the cat is dehydrated the gums look dry and pale. Healthy gums are normally pink in color.

Sunken eyes – when a cat is dehydrated her eyeballs sink deeper than normal into the orbit

Other signs of dehydration are Lethargy or Depression.

It is very important if your cat has any of these signs to go immediately with her at the vet. If your cat is dehydrated she can be helped only by a vet who will treat the cause and nurse the cat back to health.
