Bringing a new cat home soon? How exciting! Opening your heart and home to a cat is an unique experience. Along with the joy of adopting a cat, comes few basic responsibilities. There are a few things that you should know before bringing the cat home. There are a few things that you will need to buy for the cat and also a few things that you need to check and do to ensure your house is a safe place for a cat.
Here is what you will need to have when the kitty arrives:

– a litter box – yes, your cat will pee and poop. Even if you plan to let your cat outdoors too, you will still need the litter box at least at the start as you will have to keep her only indoors for a while until she will get accustomed with the place. There’s a wide range of options of litter boxes available. Whatever works best for your budget and preferences will be fine.

When it comes to the litter that goes in the box here you should be careful. If you adopt a kitten try to avoid silica cat litter because kittens are particularly likely to eat litter crystals while exploring their surroundings. And that would be really bad for their health.

You’ll need food and water bowls for your cat, of course. Stainless steel bowls would be the best option because they are easy to clean and sterilize. But also glass or ceramic are fine.

If you are ready to adopt a cat you should already know that cats love to scratch. So getting a scratching post, a cat tree for example will offer the cat the perfect place to scratch.

Cats like to have a comfy place to call their own for sleeping. There are so many types of cats bed on the market that you might find difficult to choose what bed would be the best for the cat. The cat will love any bed that is soft and warm. It might be as simple as a pillow, but some of the cats show a preference for nest-type beds.

Toys, toys, toys – kittens are playful but adult cats are playful too. You can buy as many toys as you like as your cat will enjoy playing with them.

Carrier – when you have a cat is essential to have a cat carrier too. It is the only safe way to transport your cat, even if you don’t plan any trips longer than to the nearest vet. If you own a cat, a cat carrier is a must have. Some people transport their cats in an old cardboard box, in a simple bag or in their arms but this is totally unsafe and if you care for your cat you wouldn’t like to put her in danger. Cats can easily get scared and they can escape or become injured if you are transporting them in items that are not specifically designed to be cat travel carriers. Loud noises, new places can make our cats react unpredictable.

Another important aspect that you have to check before bringing a cat home are plants. Do you have plants in your home? If yes, google each of them and check if they are safe for cats. Cats are tempted to chew plants so make sure your plants are not poisonous for cats.

Another thing that you have to do is to secure your windows. If you live at a high floor or if you plan to keep your cat indoors make sure you have protective nets at your windows. Windows are for cats like TV’s they love to sit by the window and watch the birds and squirrels outside. They are curious creatures and they can jump and you wouldn’t like for something bad to happen to your beloved cat.

Most of all, be patient and give a lot of love to your new kitty! It may take her a little while to get used to her new environment. And if it possible, always consider adopting two cats in stead of just one. 🙂
